2017 November Meeting — Open Sesame! …uh, Saskatchewan

Category : Meeting

We’ve all used products such as Open Office, FileZilla and GNUCash as an alternative to pricey commercial packages with strings attached.  Once upon a time, the wealth of 3rd party applications available on the AS/400 platform helped it grow and become a competitive player in the midrange market.  It’s no secret, though, that the stagnancy of these applications and their often unfriendly licensing terms eventually constrained the platform and made it less competitive.  It’s also no secret that today IBM views Power as an ideal host for open source solutions written on other platforms, and has empowered IBM i to host them accordingly.  Christopher Burns is championing open-source software on the IBM i and has released several open-source projects on GitHub including RPTMOD and Inuendo.  This month he will demonstrate these wares and will share some of the perils and pitfalls of prepping native IBM i solutions for the open source distribution model.

Our speaker for September will be Christopher Burns from GEMKO Information Group of Buffalo, NY.  He specializes in application modernization and developer education.  His highly differentiated solutions for companies using both home grown and 3rd party software are unmatched in the industry.  He speaks regularly about these solution concepts at user groups and conferences.  Chris holds several IBM certifications and has been hosting and evolving the 21st Century Midrange Developer training series since 2003.  He has also served on the IBM certification exam development team.  More recently, Chris has been the driving force behind Inuendo – an open source project for data virtualization..  Round up your co-workers and get your reservations in soon.
